The next version of search may not only send people to websites. It may send AI agents that compare options, fill out forms, request quotes, add products to carts or help users complete tasks.
That is the direction Google is now preparing site owners for. In a new web.dev guide on building agent-friendly websites, Google says websites have “a new type of visitor”: autonomous AI systems that can interpret input, plan actions and execute tasks on behalf of users.
The guidance gives SEOs and developers a more practical way to think about the agentic web. It is not only about whether a page can rank. It is also about whether an AI agent can understand the page, identify the right action and complete a user journey without getting stuck.
Search is moving toward agents
The idea is not coming out of nowhere. Google CEO Sundar Pichai has described a future where Search becomes more agentic. In comments reported by Search Engine Journal, Pichai said some information-seeking queries will become agentic search and that Search could act more like an “agent manager.”
That changes the role of a website.
In the old model, a user searched, clicked a result and navigated the site manually. In the agentic model, the user may ask an AI assistant to do something: find a product, compare providers, get a quote, book an appointment or complete a purchase. The agent then has to decide which websites to use and whether it can actually complete the task there.
For SEO, that adds a new question: if an agent reaches your site, can it use it?
How AI agents understand a page
Google says AI agents currently rely on three main ways to assess websites: screenshots, raw HTML and the accessibility tree.
Screenshots help agents understand visual layout, size, placement, color and proximity. This can help an agent recognize a search box, a form area or a prominent call-to-action. But screenshots can be slow, expensive and unreliable if they are the only signal.
Raw HTML gives agents the structure of the page. It helps them understand what elements are nested together, how content is organized and whether a button belongs to a specific product, form or section.
The accessibility tree may be the most important part for action-based tasks. Google describes it as a browser-native representation of roles, names and states of interactive elements. It was built for assistive technologies such as screen readers, but it also gives agents a cleaner map of what a page does.
In practical terms, if a button looks clickable to a human but is not properly labeled or exposed in the accessibility tree, an agent may struggle to understand or use it.
Why this matters for SEOs
Traditional SEO has focused on discovery: can search engines crawl, index, understand and rank a page?
Agentic SEO adds another layer: can an AI system complete the task the user asked for?
That matters for ecommerce, SaaS, lead generation, local services, booking platforms, publishers and any website that depends on interactive journeys. If an agent cannot select a product variant, submit a quote form, understand pricing, choose a plan or add an item to a cart, the business may lose the conversion even if the page was discoverable.
This does not mean agent-readiness is a confirmed ranking factor. Google has not said that agent-friendly websites rank higher in organic search.
But it does mean the technical foundations of websites may become more important as AI assistants start acting on behalf of users.
What Google recommends
Google’s guidance is not a list of new SEO tricks. Much of it overlaps with good technical SEO, accessibility and UX work.
Site owners should use semantic HTML, make buttons and links clear, label form fields properly, avoid fake buttons built from generic elements and make interactive journeys predictable. Important actions should be visible, properly named and easy to understand from the page structure.
For many sites, this means checking whether the page still makes sense when stripped down to its structure.
Useful questions include:
- Can an agent identify the main purpose of the page?
- Are buttons, links and form fields clearly labeled?
- Does the accessibility tree reflect the actions users can take?
- Can key tasks be completed without fragile JavaScript behavior?
- Are product, service, price and availability details easy to extract?
- Can an agent move through a quote, booking, signup or checkout flow?
These are not only AI questions. They are also user experience questions. If an agent struggles to use a form, there is a good chance some human users do too.
WebMCP shows where this may be heading
One emerging idea in this area is WebMCP, which lets websites expose structured tools that AI agents can call directly instead of forcing them to infer actions from screenshots and page structure.
Search consultant Suganthan Mohanadasan recently published a practical WebMCP implementation guide, explaining how websites can tell agents what actions are available rather than making agents guess from the interface.
The concept is simple: instead of an AI agent clicking around a website like a human user with limited vision, the site can provide a clearer machine-readable layer for specific tasks.
This is still early. WebMCP is not a mainstream SEO requirement, and most businesses should not rush into it without a clear use case. But it points to a larger shift: websites may need to serve both human visitors and machine agents that act for humans.
There are also security risks
The agentic web is not only an opportunity. It also creates new risks.
Researchers have warned that AI agents can be vulnerable when they rely on page content or accessibility structures to decide what to do. Recent research on agent-web interaction argues that current agents often have to infer website functionality from human-oriented interfaces, which can make interactions brittle, inefficient and potentially insecure. arXiv
That means making websites agent-friendly will need more than better labels and cleaner forms. It will also require safeguards around what agents are allowed to read, trust and execute.
The Query Post view
This is still early, but it is one of the more important SEO shifts to watch.
Search has already moved from blue links to summaries, AI answers and multimodal discovery. The next step is action. Users will not only ask AI systems for information. They will ask them to do things.
When that happens, websites will be judged by more than whether they can be found. They will also be judged by whether they can be used by agents.
That does not mean every site needs WebMCP tomorrow. It does not mean agent-friendly design is a confirmed ranking signal. And it does not mean classic SEO goes away.
But it does mean SEOs should pay closer attention to the parts of websites that agents rely on: semantic HTML, accessibility, clear forms, structured content, predictable navigation and task completion.
The practical takeaway is simple: make the site easier to understand and easier to act on.
If that helps users, search engines and AI agents at the same time, it is probably the right work to prioritize.
